Adrian Sherwood

Né à la fin des années 50, il est l'un des pionniers du reggae anglais. Ses premières tentatives dans le business, à la fin des 70's, furent désastreuses et trés onéreuses. Il n'en perdit pas la foi pour le reggae pour autant, bien au contraire. Il retenta l'experience en créant le label On-U Sound et signe son premier artiste : Mark Stewart, du projet New-Age Stepper. De ce succés, suivront nombre de singles, 10" et plus d'une centaines d'albums, notemment avec les regrettés Bim Sherman et Prince Far I, Dub Syndicate (une partie expatriée des Roots Radics) et même Mothmen (embryon de Simply Red). Adrian copie le scéma jamaiquain : un groupe, un studio, un sound system, un style tels les Revolutionaries, Soul Syndicate ou encore les Roots Radics. Certains musiciens restent affiliés au On-U Sound label / sound system. C'est le cas de Bonjo (African Head Charge), Bim Sherman, Skip Mc Donald, et Keith Leblanc (Trackhead). Sherwood devient trés apprecié au niveau de la prod qu'il a paufiné au contact de Prince Far I et Dr Pablo. Il fricote aussi avec The Fall, Ministry et Depeche Mode alors grands groupes de la scène pop rock anglaise. Il faut attendre que Gary Clail (un des premiers toasters blanc) entre dans les charts pour que On-U Sound gagne l'interêt d'un public plus large. La fusion rock-reggae du label est un succés, même si Adrian a la déroutante (et fâcheuse) habitude de rajouter 10 ans aux années de parution des albums (Another 1993 On-U Sound production date en fait de 1983). Il enregistre Prince Far I comme jamais il ne l'a été.
